Tim Edwards is an artist whose work in glass is fuelled by a lifelong and daily drawing practice, and an interest in the graphic qualities of film, animation and comics. A doodle might seem at the opposite end of the making spectrum from blowing glass, one of the most technically demanding creative mediums, yet this is how Edwards finds the strenuously linear forms that evolve into his vessels. After they are blown each vessel is carved. This reductive process enables Edwards to produce the graphic qualities that make his works so distinctive.
These objects are produced in series, explore ideas of perception and deception, and contain inherent contradictions, what he has described as the “tug of war between seeing and knowing”. The Line Drawing series (2016) are translucent forms with dark outlines and, with their outlined edges, these three-dimensional objects take on two-dimensional qualities. Other series explore form using colour and shapes that defy their encapsulation within glass. In 2018 his work was exhibited in the Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Divided Worlds, where writer and curator Julie Ewington noted his sensitive capture of the space between drawing and glass.
Edwards went to art school in Warrnambool (BA, Deakin University, 1998-90), and undertook post-graduate studies (University of Tasmania, Hobart, 1991). In 1992 he became Associate Designer at Adelaide’s JamFactory.
He has been awarded multiple Australia Council grants, commissions and residencies, and has exhibited extensively overseas and in Australia. His work is held in major collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia and Wagga Wagga Regional Art Gallery. International collections include Museum of Glass, Tacoma, and Corning Museum of Glass (both USA).Download CV - pdf
