Julie Reeves' work explores the way in which surface manipulates desire. In earlier work, she examined the allure of decoration and its ability to manipulate the viewer. Consequent to that investigation, she has turned her attention to mass media's depiction of beauty, and how it employs surface appearance to excite our longing.
Using images gleaned from television, film and print media, Reeves maps these processes of seduction to reveal the way in which images are visually encoded for consumption. Her scrutiny also draws attention to our own role in such transactions. Her paintings may appear to enact certain tropes - of portraiture or decoration - but they constitute its opposite. What Reeves' work reveals are the templates for desire. |
