MR SQUISHY CONTEMPLATES THE NIGHT SKY  2010
WOMBEYAN MARBLE & RESIN INLAY  14.0 X 40.0 X 33.0 CM
The work of sculptor Alexander Seton represents one reason for the increasing interest in sculpture in Australia over the past couple of decades. His carved marble illusions have created a point of fascination for viewers of Sydney's 'Sculpture by the Sea' exhibitions for two successive years.

Seton's growing reputation is based on his undeniable skill in producing predominantly marble sculptures that play on optical illusion and the perception of surface. So convincing are the delicately crafted surfaces of his work that amazed viewers have tried to flop into his white marble beanbags, or to brush away the impression of a bottom he had fashioned into the surface of a marble sofa.
Life-size replications of jackets, cushions and armchairs confound the real and the artificial, and confuse everyday objects with art objects. His works constitute striking statements that transform the ordinary. Although it is still early in his career, Seton's remarkable carving skills have already created immense interest.

He has developed a strong following in Australia and overseas, and has won numerous awards, including the Young Sculptor's Honourable Mention at 'Sculpture by the Sea', and the Art Gallery Society of New South Wales Prize in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, Seton was selected to participate in the competitive Carlos III International Sculpture Symposium in Spain.
