In celebration of Birdlife Australia’s Aussie Bird Count this week (19 - 25 October), we’re sharing a selection of artworks celebrating the extraordinary diversity of our native birdlife. Now in its thirteenth year, the Aussie Bird Count is a nationwide initiative encouraging Australians to connect with nature while contributing to bird conservation. Taking part is simple: spend 20 minutes observing and recording the birds around you, whether in your backyard, at work, at school or in your local park. To learn more or to take part in this year’s count, visit the Birdlife Australia website.

To coincide with his forthcoming exhibition, ‘Don’t forget to breathe’, join us and Art on James for a special evening with Archibald Prize-winning artist Richard Lewer at Harveys on Thursday 29 October.

For his latest project, ‘People In Your Neighbourhood’, Richard has turned his attention to James Street, spending time getting to know the people, places and everyday stories that give the precinct its character. Through conversations, chance encounters and a little local gossip, he has created a new series of 60 drawings that capture the personalities and rhythms of the neighbourhood, accompanied by his own observations and anecdotes.

A selection of these drawings will also appear throughout James Street from 29 October to 12 November bringing Richard’s portraits of the neighbourhood back to the place and people that inspired them.

Join Richard for dinner and a conversation with Professor Lisa Slade as they reflect on the project, his practice and the stories that inspire his work. Guests will receive a complimentary limited edition zine featuring the drawings and accompanying stories.

Places are limited and bookings are essential. Click the link in our bio to secure your seat.

COMING SOON - Richard Lewer, ’Don’t forget to breathe’

We are excited to present ‘Don’t forget to breathe’, Richard Lewer’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.

“Across some sixty small paintings, the world arrives without much regard for hierarchy. A storm gathers over a suburban street. Two Cape Barren geese stand in the middle of a road. An albatross crosses an empty sky. MH370 remains suspended above a line of trees. Elsewhere there is a plait of hair, a vase of flowers, Uluru after rain, a full moon. One image follows another, each carrying whatever weight it happened to possess at the moment Lewer encountered it, before slipping into the larger field of our own associations and memories.

Taken one by one, each painting is an immediate response to a particular thing. Together, they begin to resemble something far more complicated: the unruly movement of a mind trying to keep pace with the world. Lewer has always been an avid observer. His work has moved through true crime, sport, religion, family, shame, grief and other people’s confessions, drawn from the stories and circumstances he encounters around him. In Don’t forget to breathe, that attention feels accelerated and compressed. The paintings operate almost at the speed of encounter. Something catches his eye, troubles him, amuses him or refuses to leave, and into the work it goes.” - Milena Stojanovska

’Don’t forget to breathe’ will be showing in the gallery from 28 October – 14 November.

The exhibition is now available to preview, please contact the gallery to request a catalogue.

Join artist Gerwyn Davies and the inimitable Courtney Act at the Regent Cinema, Murwillumbah, for an in-depth conversation exploring Davies’ celebrated photographic practice, his larger-than-life characters and the ideas behind his work.

This one-night-only event is presented in conjunction with Gerwyn’s solo exhibition, ‘Sunburn’, currently on display at Tweed Regional Gallery.

Developed in 2025 during the artist’s Nancy Fairfax Residency at Tweed Regional Gallery, ’Sunburn’ presents a series of vibrant, new textile-based and photographic works that reimagine the low-brow ephemera and visual icons of the nation’s glitter strip.
