Congratulations to Betty Muffler who has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2024 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA) with her work, ‘Ngangkari Ngura – Healing Country’.
Painted in a monochromatic palette, Betty captures and represents her deep connection to Country and their Tjukurpa (cultural heritage of past, present and emerging).
“My paintings are about Ngangkari (traditional healing practices) and sites related to healing. I’ve painted rock holes and water flowing through the landscape, just like the energy that flows through people and places – it’s invisible to most people but Ngangkari can see spirits and feel a lot of different energy.” – Betty Muffler
The NATSIAA exhibition has been running since 1984 and is the most prestigious Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. The award and exhibition seek to showcase the validity and cultural diversity of contemporary Indigenous art from around Australia from emerging and established artists. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on 9 August 2024.
Best of luck Betty!
