Gerwyn Davies at Museum of Sydney

A new body of work by Gerwyn Davies will be on display in ‘Iridescent’, opening 4 December 2021 at the Museum of Sydney.

In this new series, the artist responded to the museums, historic houses and gardens which are cared for by the Sydney Living Museums and the NSW State Archives. In 12 large-scale photographic works, as described on the Museum of Sydney website, “…Davies dramatically transforms each property into a stage on which an extravagant performance is played out for the camera by the artist as a vividly costumed character.” In working on this project, Davies delved into local history, exploring the stories and character of each place.

“I’d like visitors to think about how history presented for them is a construction, and if they’re excluded from it, they can explore creative ways in which they might engage with the story,” said Gerwyn Davies. “In the seeming absence of identifiable heroes, they can fabricate their own, which is what I’ve done.” (Gerwyn Davies, 2021)

We look forward to seeing more new work from Gerwyn Davies in 2022. To register your interest, email the gallery at enquiries@janmurphygallery.com.au.
