New to Protégé – India Mark

Jan Murphy Gallery is pleased to announce India Mark as the newest addition to the protégé program.

Working predominately in still life, India Mark’s paintings analyse composition, light and the textural qualities of ordinary objects. Working tonally and from life, Mark gently prods the tension points between visual depth and flatness, colour and shadow.

“The objects I choose for each painting are small, practical items that reoccur frequently throughout my work. Jars, bottles, cups and other vessels become a system of symbols, almost alphabetical in their repetition. They are broken down into elementary forms, stacked upon one another to create new silhouettes and rearranged over and over again in attempt to understand every compositional possibility.” (India Mark)

Mark (born 1993) graduated with a Masters of Fine Art (Painting) from Sydney’s National Art School in 2018. She is a two time finalist in the Archibald Prize and a finalist in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship. This year Mark was a featured in the hard cover publication ‘Still Life’, published by Thames and Hudson.
