Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country at the National Gallery of Australia

‘Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country’, is now open at the National Gallery of Australia and features works by Betty Muffler, Zaachariaha Fielding, Iluwanti Ken and Sylvia Kanytjupai Ken. This exhibition brings together works by senior First Nations artists and collectives from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, Coober Pedy and Tarntanya/Adelaide, South Australia.  Working at an ambitious scale, these paintings depict Country while honouring the enduring power of Tjukurpa (Aṉangu law/cultural stories) that shapes and sustains community life.

Through distinctive visual languages, at times vibrant and expansive, at others quiet and restrained, artists and collectives translate Tjukurpa onto canvas, reinforcing deep connections to Country and the ongoing transmission of cultural knowledge across generations.
