Congratulations to Victoria Reichelt who has been announced as a finalist in the 2021 Portia Geach Memorial Art Prize with her work, ‘Self Portrait as Parent’. Named in memory of artist Portia Geach, this prestigious prize celebrates excellence in portraiture painting by Australian women artists.
Describing her painting, Victoria notes that ‘Self Portrait as Parent’ “…speaks to my own personal experience as parent and painter, and in doing so to the larger history of women artists. In a deeply familiar moment to many parents of young children, the mother struggles with a toddler fishing through her handbag. There is a tender exhaustion for mother and child, with backs turned to the work that continues in the studio and finds its home in the gallery. Life and art go on.”
Winners will be announced 3 November, 2021.
