”In 2025, I returned to Italy for the first time in nearly twenty years. My family comes from Ravenna in Emilia–Romagna, and my father and grandparents are from the small village of Granarolo Faentino. While I was there, a local historian traced my family back to the 1700s—and that was only at first glance.

I had been invited by the community to create a mural, and I spent a wonderful month drawing, painting, and chatting with locals. The motifs in the mural centre on the canal, the heart of village life. The history of the canals of La Pianura (the lowlands) tells a story of adaptation that began in the Middle Ages — a story of communities shaping their environment in response to water, trade, and knowledge. In this body of work, I trace those rhythms of place: the flow of water, the passage of people, and the enduring sense of connection between land, architecture, and memory.

After returning to Australia, I continued to revisit the experience through large-scale paintings. I found myself thinking a great deal about continuity—how patterns repeat across cultures and generations, and how a place can feel both familiar and newly discovered.” – Marina Strocchi, 2025
